Video Game Tester - Can You Get Rich?

Working as a video game tester is not like any job. The perks are pretty amazing, but there is definitely hard work along the way. Having said that many people have asked me what you can realistically earn working as a video game tester - after all if it does not pay the bills, why would you do it?

When you start out as a video game tester the pay is average (around 15k to 20 k per year), but as you get more experienced and develop a reputation with gaming companies you can earn anything up to between 80k - 100k per year. The difficult thing is that you will be working on a job by job basis - so you need to calculate what you can earn per hour.

Gaming companies will often have inflexible deadlines when it comes to video game tester hours. Once you are assigned a job (normally you receive the game in the mail along with a survey sheet) you need to complete it within the specified time frame and accurately log your hours. Now the actual pay rate you will be offered per hour will depend on the gaming platforms you can test games on.

Insider tip - Xbox 360 games tend to fetch the highest hourly pay rates - anything up to $100 per hour. Online and PC games tend to get the lowest pay rates, for this reason I would not recommend you seek jobs for online and PC games only.

Conclusion

The key to making the most money as a video game tester is to own as many gaming platforms as possible. Furthermore you need to be reliable and show gaming companies that you can complete games testing within the deadlines they provide. So can you get rich working as a video game tester - yes if you are willing to put in the hard work and prove yourself reliable.
