Even Addictive Games Promote Family Values

There's been much debate about the effect that video games and online games have in the development of our children and even in the socialization of adults. Reams have been written about the ways in which video games isolate youngsters and encourage a sedentary lifestyle. Some argue that, when adults play video games and online games to the exclusion of other activities, they effectively distance themselves from others and put up emotional barriers. While moderation and self-control may be important considerations when playing video games and online games, I believe a case can be made that some addictive games promote family values. Some people grow up in "game" families, and others do not. I'm from a family of avid gamers - and this was long before the advent of video games and online games. Some of my first memories are of going with my parents to their friends' houses and sitting quietly while they played bridge all evening. My father worked in construction, and so was out of work during the winter. I fondly recall coming home from school and finding my mother, father, and my father's best friend sitting around the table playing cutthroat pinochle. As I grew older, I spent many weekends up at a mountain cabin, playing hearts with eight or ten other people until the wee hours of the morning. In our family, we didn't only play card games. We played every kind of game imaginable - board games, travel games, Mah Jong, outdoor games - you name it. I was the reigning backgammon champion in my college dorm. We also were voracious puzzle solvers. I preferred cryptograms and anacrostics, while my grandmother solved crossword puzzles in pen until she was 94 years old. And, yes, when the first Ataris came out, my mother bought one and we spent countless hours playing Pong and Donkey Kong. There's no question in my mind that the addictive games we played united our family and taught us important life lessons. The first lesson, of course, was don't cheat - and never play with cheaters. That has served me well in business. The second lesson was good sportsmanship: always play to win, but be gracious when you lose. That, too, has been an important life lesson. Even though I try my best, sometimes I don't come out on top. The third lesson was about the importance of thinking ahead and strategizing to reach your goals. The fourth lesson was about partnerships and teamwork. I had to learn to be a team player, and sometimes a former adversary would become an ally at a moment's notice. Most of all, though, our family's addictive game playing gave us an opportunity to be together, to have fun, and to laugh. We're all highly competitive, but at the end of the day, we're all friends. My son has inherited my love of games and puzzles. To be honest, I couldn't wait until he got old enough to start playing kid's games. Like many parents, I played Chutes and Ladders until my eyes crossed! He plays his video games - but we play a lot of them together. We also do jigsaw puzzles together and enjoy working in puzzle books and magazines. He even creates puzzle books for his classmates using the class' spelling words. So, while people turn up their noses at addictive games, I say that they can teach important life lessons and instill great family values. Play on!

Is the Next Generation of Gamers Spoiled?

As I sit here watching my friend play the game Dirt on the XBOX360, I admire just how realistic looking it is and how easily my grandparents could be fooled into thinking they were watching an actual race.

I'm reminded of the first console I ever had, which was a Super Nintendo. I played the regular Nintendo at my friend's house, but when I got to the age that my parents deemed appropriate to play video games, Super Nintendo had just come out. My friends and I would spend hours playing Super Mario, Double Dragon and Street Fighter. I also became a huge fan of RPGs thanks to the Super Nintendo's classic library of Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy III, Super Mario RPG, Lufia I & II and more that I can't think of right now.

My generation (people who are around the age of 21) was, as I see it, born in just the right time to experience the humble roots of video games and can see how far they've come today. My parents and their peers aren't included because they don't appreciate video games as much as us and didn't grow up playing them like we did.

This can apply to anything technological; I didn't get a cell phone until high school and there are kids in elementary school with theirs glued to their ears; maybe that's an exaggeration, but the point is I can remember life before cell phones and it involved a lot of collect calls made from the food court of the mall. Or when my family got its first computer; Windows hadn't even come out yet and the only interesting game was solitaire, which was more fun than trying to get connected to the internet back then.

People in middle and high school grew up after Nintendo and 32-bit consoles and played N64 and Playstation. Although those graphics can't compare to today's consoles, the jump isn't as big as it is going from Contra to Halo 3. Maybe spoiled is too harsh of a word, unappreciative might describe younger gamers a little better. But it will probably be even worse in the later generations that follow when graphics on the next consoles for Sony and Microsoft are the norm and games like NBA Jam and Frogger are going to be as ancient as the Dead Sea Scrolls.

I can't wait to see what new advancements take place in the gaming world in future years; though it may sound strange, I approach this predicament of non appreciative gamers as a society would hope to preserve its culture, because like it or not, video games are a big part of many people's lives, and not in a bad way. So keep your old Nintendo games (except ET, that goes to the landfill) and every now and then pop in a copy of Battle Toads and enjoy it with your friends because it's up to our generation to make sure classic games on the old systems are never forgotten.

What Does the Term SERPS Mean?

It sounds like a group of people fighting for freedom...or maybe a new rock band. It's neither. If you are getting into the Search Engine Optimization game in order to increase the rank of your web site, you will see this term many times. This term is one of the more important terms in the promotion industry and, quite possibly, the most important term to you.

SERPs stands for Search Engine Results Pages and the term refers to the page that is returned to you when you search for a web site based on a keyword, set of keywords, phrase, etc. The important thing on a SERP is to rank as close to the top as possible. For example, if you search for the phrase "Small Business" in Google today, you will get a bunch of sites, with www.sba.gov being the first one. This means the SBA site ranks #1 in the SERPs.

Think about how you use search engines. When you do a search, how far do you go down the list of results before you either give up or you try different search criteria? If you are like most people, you only go through 10-15 results before moving on. Now let's say your company sells widgets and when you do a search, your company typically shows up between 25th and 40th position. The typical user will never get to the results for your company.

In order to make sure you show up near the top, you need to select specific keywords that you want your site to rank for and optimize your site to that effect. This includes things like having lots of content on your site that contains the keywords, having people link to you that have the keywords on their site, putting the keywords in your META tags, ALT parameters, file names, ... the list goes on.

By the way, if you search and you put quotes around the words, it become a phrase. A search for words without quotes around them is called a keyword search.

Now you know what SERPs are. Go forth and use the word in a sentence and sound smart.
